Food as Medicine Was Never a Trend. It Was Dinner.

By Wendy Zhang · Food Scientist & Founder, SESA

For most of human history, there was no line between the kitchen and the medicine cabinet. Food was the first medicine — and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it still is.

Now the rest of the world is catching up. The global food-as-medicine market is projected to grow from roughly $254 billion in 2026 to more than $400 billion by 2031. In the U.S. alone, functional foods and beverages are on track to reach nearly $107 billion this year. The clean-label, minerals-from-real-food movement everyone is suddenly talking about? TCM has been practicing it for two thousand years.

What TCM Got Right First

TCM never treated food as fuel. It treated food as information — each ingredient carrying a role in warming, cooling, nourishing, or balancing the body. Long before “functional food” was a marketing category, black sesame (黑芝麻) was valued for exactly that: nourishing the blood, supporting hair, and building the kind of deep, steady energy that doesn’t spike and crash.

That wasn’t folklore. It was observation, refined across generations of people who ate intentionally because they had no other option.

Why the Science Keeps Circling Back

Modern nutrition keeps rediscovering what these traditions already knew. The minerals most linked to energy, focus, and hair health — iron, magnesium, zinc, copper — are exactly the ones modern diets tend to leave out, and exactly the ones black sesame is rich in. The food-as-medicine movement isn’t inventing something new. It’s validating something old with a lab coat on.

Trend vs. Tradition

Here’s the risk with any trend: it flattens things. “Food as medicine” can quickly become a protocol — a supplement stack, a powder, a rulebook. That’s not what nourishment looked like for the generations who relied on it. They didn’t seed-cycle. They ate real food, every day, and let it do its quiet work.

That’s the philosophy behind SESA. We didn’t set out to ride a trend. We started with a seed our families had eaten for centuries and made it easy to eat now — eight real ingredients, mineral-dense, no protocol required. Black sesame doesn’t need a wellness label to justify it. It just needs a place at your table.

Food as medicine was never a trend. For a very long time, it was simply dinner. We think that’s worth remembering.
